A child-friendly family garden in Gateshead

The brief

Our client wanted to refresh their existing garden and incorporate child-friendly fun into a space that could be enjoyed by everyone. Rather than a full makeover, the client requested a cost-effective combination of new elements and repairs or modifications to existing elements that still had some life left in them.

With ideas for tree removal, fences, gates and playhouses, the client asked that we quote for a range of different options; enabling them to choose a design and price which worked for both them and their neighbours.

We're happy to recommend you guys to anyone who asks - and a few that don’t! - we’re really pleased with the work and our girls love playing out there!

The work

We started with the removal of several large trees which were shading the garden from the best hours of sunshine. Privacy was maintained between the two properties with the installation of a new timber fence along the property line.

To the perimeter of the garden, an existing brick wall was becoming unstable and needed some care and attention; our team reduced the height to make it safe and topped it with a timber fence. An existing deck was in a good state of repair, requiring only a new set of stairs and a handrail to make it fit for the new space. We installed timber lawn edging around the existing lawn, this complemented the new fencing and gave the space a more natural feel.

Finally – the fun part – a garden playhouse with slide was installed into an area of playsafe wood chip with edging to match the rest of the lawn. Accessible from the deck, the playhouse adds a child-friendly fun into this urban family garden.

The result

Removal of the trees opened up the space to reveal a sunsoaked space which can be utilised by the full family. Our team were mindful to sensitively integrate new elements into the existing space, enabling us to freshen up the garden and make it the perfect place for both play and relaxation.
